Child Asks Obama:"Why Do People Hate You?"
At a a town hall in New Orleans, a child asks President Obama "Why do people hate you?" Transcript: Okay, here's -- this young man, right here. I'm going to let him use my special mic. Hey, this is a big guy -- don't go "awww." Come on, man, I mean, this is a -- all right, what's your name? Q Terrence Scott (phonetic). THE PRESIDENT: Terrence Scott. What do you have to say? Q I have to say, why do people hate you and why -- they supposed to love you, and God is love and -- THE PRESIDENT: That's what I'm talking about. (Laughter and applause.) Come on. That's what I'm talking about. Terrence, I appreciate that. What grade are you in? Q Fourth. THE PRESIDENT: You're in fourth grade? Well, now, first of all, I did get elected President, so not everybody hates me, now. I don't want you to -- (laughter.) I got a whole lot of votes. I want to make sure everybody understands. But you know, what is true is if you were watching TV lately, it seems like everybody is just getting mad all the time. And, you know, I think that you've got to take it with a grain of salt. Some of it is just what's called politics, where once one party wins then the other party kind of gets -- feels like it needs to poke you a little bit to keep you on your toes. And so you shouldn't take it too seriously. And then sometimes -- as I said before, people just -- I think they're worried about their own lives. A lot of people are losing their jobs right now. A lot of people are losing their health care or they've lost their homes to foreclosure. And they're feeling frustrated. And when you're President of the United States, you know, you've got to deal with all of that. That's exactly right. And, you know, you get some of the credit when things go good; and when things are going tough, then you're going to get some of the blame and that's part of the job. But, you know, I'm a pretty tough guy. Are you a tough guy? You look like you're pretty tough. And so you've just got to keep on going even when folks are criticizing you. Because as ...

Minneapolis Police Kill Blevins As He Runs Away- Body Cam Video
This is the "stabilized" video referenced in the press release from Minneapolis Mayor's office. Please be advised that the footage is very graphic. This video is not suitable for young people or sensitive viewers. Press release: Today, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey released body worn camera (BWC) video footage from the fatal June 23 officer-involved shooting of Thurman Blevins. The release comes 36 days after the shooting. Three video files have been made public: two raw videos and a stabilized and analyzed video. The raw video footage comes straight from the responding officers Justin Schmidt’s and Ryan Kelly’s BWCs. These files contain movement and provide a lower level of clarity. The stabilized and analyzed video was not produced by the MPD. It was produced by the National Center for Audio & Video Forensics in Beverly Hills, California, as contracted by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA), and provided to the City of Minneapolis by the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office. The National Center for Audio & Video Forensics ran this video through a stabilizing and analysis process. The stabilized and analyzed video includes footage from both MPD officers Justin Schmidt and Ryan Kelly. The stabilizing software identifies pixels from each frame and aligns them to help limit the “shake” that can occur without altering the content. The raw footage and stabilized and analyzed footage have been presented in the interest of full transparency.

GOP Lawmaker Regrets Voting Against Same-Sex Marriage -Lynne Osterman
Lynne Osterman who was elected as a Republican to the Minnesota legislature says she regrets casting a "political expedient" vote for Minnesota's "Defense of Marriage" law that outlawed same-sex marriage. She tears up when talking about it and urges Minnesota lawmakers to legalize same-sex marriage. Transcript: I'm Lynn Osterman from New Hope and I thank you sincerely for the opportunity to be part of this discussion. When I was a sophomore in college I set the goal to serve in the Minnesota House of Representatives. And when I got here, thinking I was going to be a thoughtful citizen legislator, I was ill-prepared for the partisanship that greeted my class. The chair's class of 2002. I served as a Republican because of my interest in smaller government. And it was incredibly counter-intuitive to me to then upon my arrival, tell citizens how the government wanted them to live their lives. I didn't' come to St. Paul to single out same-sex couples and their families. But in my only term as a member..... .... I cast a politically expedient vote in favor of DOMA and I have regretted that ever since. It was not in my conscience or my own compass. My dad is a retired Presbyterian minister. In fact, he served the congregation that Reverend Chadwick now serves. I've heard lots of bible-based sermons over the years. And never once did I hear that someone else's love was somehow lesser than the love between my parents of now 55 years. My husband of almost 26 years and I have established and demonstrated our decision making priorities with our two children, stressing people are more important. It's never been "well, except for those people." Nothing in my life says it's OK to treat people differently than how I would want to be treated— fairly, respectfully, equally. And that's really what this conversation is about. Whether you believe in big government or small, do you believe in fair, respectful, equal? Is it ever OK to say "well, except for those people?" I feel like I'm at the Oscars, I see the red sign. Lawmakers before us—you— all over this nation have had conversations about equality, respectability and fairness. We've all taken our history classes and could come up with our own list of instances. What were the polls like for those issues? Was everyone ready when our elected officials took the reigns and led our community, state and nation so those laws were changed? Voting no today, this session, might seem politically expedient. But I can tell you from experience that you will have to live knowing that a no vote is not fair, it's not respectful and it's not equal. I blew my vote. And I'm imploring you, please get this right. Minnesota citizens just want you to lead.

EpiPen Maker CEO Grilled By Congress
Heather Bresch, the CEO of Mylan which makes the EpiPen is grilled by House members on why the price of the device has risen to about $600. The price of the device, used in emergencies to treat severe allergic reactions, has increased more than 500% since Mylan acquired it in 2007. A two-pack of the EpiPen now has a list price of $608. Rep. Jason Chaffetz asked a simple question to start: You raised the price — what did you think was going to happen? Bresch did a lot of gymnastics to explain how Mylan actually doesn't make that much money on the drug, but Chaffetz wasn't having it. "This doesn't make any sense," he said. "This is why we don't believe you."

We Are Still Here: 40 Years of AIM in Photographs
Journalist and writer Laura Waterman Wittstock and photographer Dick Bancroft have recorded, written and taken pictures of the American Indian Movement (AIM) for over 40 years. Their book, We Are Still Here published by the Minnesota Historical Society Press, is a testament to that effort. It includes Wittstock's reflections on covering the native American civil rights movement as a young reporter in Washington, D.C., as well as some of Bancroft's striking and iconic images as the movement struggled for Native independence. An exhibit of Bancroft's photos opened May 10 at All My Relations Gallery on Franklin Avenue, celebrated by drummers performing the AIM honor song, traditional foods and a gathering of AIM activists, including Clyde Bellecourt and Bill Means. Bellecourt, a member of the White Earth band of Ojibwe, reminded the crowd what it took for them to get to this place. "Our people were so beaten down," he shouted to the crowd, "We didn't think we could pull ourselves up," he said as he went on to tell people how AIM began as a group of people meeting on the Northside of Minneapolis. After years of enduring poverty and abuse from police, the Indian activists decided to take matters into their own hands. It wasn't just about better living conditions for Native Americans on and off the reservation, but about reviving their culture and demanding the federal government honor its treaties and show native nations the respect they deserved. In 1972, Bellecourt and others traveled to Washington in a protest called The Trail of Broken Treaties to demand the federal government remove officials running the Bureau of Indian Affairs who AIM accused of being corrupt and greedy. That's where the photos of Bancroft's and the words of Waterman Wittstock come into play. Photos of the BIA building takeover showed American Indian men and women not as the cowboys and Indians of the John Wayne movie-myth making era, but as anxious and restless souls overturning desks, banging on drums and demanding the ear of federal officials to say that Indians were still here. After three days, the protesters left the BIA building, taking with them the jobs of three officials in charge of the decision making. It had been a victory, but AIM members would take another militant stand at the impoverished village of Wounded Knee, South Dakota, in just a few months. Bancroft would also be at that 1973 armed confrontation between activists and their supporters on one side, and reservation officials and federal authorities on the other. Bancroft had gotten a camera as a birthday gift from his wife and was seen as an unofficial reporter within the movement. He remembers being the only one with a camera and the ability to afford the film.

White House Uses Beer Drinking Story To Explain Tax Cuts
White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders reads an email that has been circulating on the internet as a way of trying to explain the Trump tax cut plan. Suppose that every day ten people for our purposes, we’ll say reporters, go out for beer. The bill for all ten comes to $100. If these ten reporters paid their tab every night the way we pay our taxes, would go something like this. the first four, the poorest, would pay nothing. The fifth would pay $1, the sixth would pay $3, the seventh would pay $7, the eighth would pay $12, the ninth would pay $18, the tenth, the richest, would pay $59. So, that’s what they decided to do. The ten reporters drink in the bar every day and seemed quite happy with the arrangement until one day the bar owner threw them a curve. Since you’re all such good customers, he said, I’m going to reduce the cost of your daily beer by $20. Drinks for the ten reporters would now cost just $80. The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes. so the first four were unaffected. they would still drink for free. what about the other six? how could they divide the $20 windfall so that everyone would get their fair share? these are the reporters, After all, so they’re concerned with fairness. They realize that $20 divided by six is $3.33. But if they subtracted that from everybody’s share, then the fifth reporter and the sixth reporter, would each end up being paid to drink beer. So, the bar owner suggested it would be fair to reduce each man’s bill by a higher percentage the poorer he was. by doing that he explained, they continue following the principle of the tax system they’d been using. He proceeded to work out the amounts he suggested that each should pay now. so, the fifth reporter, like the first four, now paid nothing. He got a 100% savings. the sixth now paid $2 instead of $3, a 33 percent savings. The seventh now paid $7, a 28 percent savings. the eighth now paid $9 instead of $12, a 25 percent saving. the ninth now paid $14 instead of $18, which was a 22 percent saving. The tenth now paid $49 instead of $59, a 16 percent saving. So each of the six was better off than before, and the first four continued to drink for free. But once outside the bar, the reporters began to compare their savings. I only got $1 out of the $20 saving, declared the sixth reporter. She pointed to the tenth reporter, and he got $10. Yes that’s right, exclaimed the sixth reporter. I only saved $1 too. It’s unfair that he received 10x more benefit than me. That’s true, why should he get $10 back when I only got $2? The wealthy gets all the breaks. wait a minute, yelled the first four reporters, we didn’t get anything at all. This new tax system exploits the poor. The nine reporters yelled at the tenth and made him feel bad so the next time the tenth man didn’t show up for drinks and the nine sat down and had their beers without him. When it came time to pay the bill, they discovered something important. They no longer had enough money between them all to even cover half of the bill. “And that, ladies and gentlemen, is how our tax system works,” Sanders continued. “The people who are being paid the highest taxes will naturally benefit from a tax reduction but not the largest benefit. Taxing them too much and they might start drinking overseas where the atmosphere is somewhat friendlier. This is a silly story but it illustrates a very important point. Our tax cuts and reforms will create a fair system that works better for everyone. It will make our country the friendliest in the world for American families trying to build a better life for their children. And for American companies seeking a competitive edge. I will be happy to get that story to everybody so you can get those numbers later. again, i know that may be an oversimplification but it paints a very good picture of the tax system.”
