ESF JCSRS vocational programme opens door of opportunity to special needs students

04:05
During the last three years ESF Jockey Club Sarah Roe School (JCSRS) has made significant strides to establish a robust vocational education programme for our students. This includes developing external placements with a range of local service providers in addition to an extensive range of vocational opportunities within the school setting. Our partnership with SWIRE enables students to access vocational training at East Hotel. Placements there enable students to work in the housekeeping, laundry and restaurant departments. At Sai Kung Community Centre students contribute to keeping the nursery clean and packing food parcels for members of the local community who are financially challenged. A new venture in 2018-19 involves a partnership with Lohas Training Centre. Through this, students from JCSRS are developing skills in packing for retail services, working in the Lohas café and co-creating jewelry. Thanks to the support from SWIRE Foundation and the JCSRS PTA, the above promotional video was created in which it demonstrates the significant achievements of our students in their vocational programmes. We hope that this video will enable us to secure further work placement opportunities.

Applied learning pathway in Hong Kong for students above 16 years old

10:59
The English Schools Foundation in Hong Kong has developed a variety of Applied Learning programmes across five ESF schools: King George V School, Sha Tin College, South Island School, Island School and West Island School for students above 16 years old. Applied Learning is focused on experiential learning and is for students who prefer a more practically oriented style of learning. It is suitable for students who have a clear idea of their future career and who want to specialise and focus on one or two subject areas. The type of student we are encouraging to consider the applied courses may have strong aspirations in specialist disciplines such as Art, Sport, Performing Arts, Engineering and Business. The courses are career orientated and are designed to allow students to follow an alternative pathway to university entry, and in some cases, to employment. Applied learning is a process of integrating one or more topic areas into authentic learning experiences. It provides opportunities in the problem solving process, the manipulative use of tools, equipment, materials and related techniques, and in personal skills, occupational awareness and safety, and employment literacy. ESF Applied Learning Fair 26Sept2012

01:17
The ESF Applied Learning Fair 2012 took place on 26 September. Its central purpose was to enable students and their parents to explore the pathways to higher education offered by the Applied Learning Pathway. Over 400 parents and students from seven schools visited the fair where nearly 70 higher education institutions were displaying their potential courses for study. This was the third ESF Applied Learning Fair and the biggest and the most international fair ever held. Universities from the USA, Canada, Australia, and Europe joined universities from Hong Kong and the United Kingdom. This initiative was steered by Ellie Tang and the team of Higher Education Counsellors at West Island School led by Catherine Schofield, and on behalf of the ESF Higher Education and Applied Learning Networks. The reputation of the secondary schools continues to be enhanced by the quality of our graduating students and the destinations they have already achieved. Jane Foxcroft, Principal of West Island School and host for this event, said that the success is a tribute to the programme first founded at WIS: 'Students with Distinctions are accessing full "Bachelor's" degree courses and those with Distinctions and Merits are accessing four year degree programmes -- they get offers and choices that were beyond our initial expectations when we started the programme.' Other students are accessing Foundation and Associate degree programmes in a host of subjects. 'This is allowing students to map an individual and appropriate pathway and gain confidence in their last two years of school,' added Matt Rappel, the Applied Learning Coordinator at Island School.
